After three and half years of van-ownership, we've reached another milestone; time for the van to undergo delicate surgery at the hands of GT Campers and have the pop-top roof installed. No more bending-double to get dressed or make a brew, no more condensation issues, no more using the front seats as storage.
Here's a rare shot of the van emptied, cleaned and ready to go at the weekend:
I also took the opportunity to fix a dodgy connection in the housing for the number plate lights; a bit of a fiddly job to get at all the bolts in tailgate but well worth the effort. I upgrade to some SMD lights from TransportersRus whilst everything was apart - hopefully no more bulb failures!
Watch this space for some updates on the roof, I'm going to ask them to keep me updated as they go along, so fingers-crossed for some progress pics.
Exciting! looking forward to seeing the pics. I didn't realise you get more condensation without a poptop.
ReplyDeleteYes. Even with the windows open a touch, the warm/damp air in the van from breathing whilst asleep tends to condensate against any cold surface such as the windscreen or any exposed metalwork - without careful insulation it is easy to make a van rusty from the inside out!
ReplyDeleteFitting a pop-top allows the van to 'breathe' and vent more as warm air rises giving better circulation and less condensation, the pop-top canvas has a vented section at the top (front, under the lip) for this very purpose.
I'm excited and nervous in equal amounts - but can't wait for the end results!

Agree about the vent strip in the pop-top......but when it is cold and windy, brrr, is like an open tent!
ReplyDelete2 options: first get an electric hook-up and run a fan heater, get in your sleeping bag and cuddle up!
Second, drop the pop-top.
I have done both, but in Croatia last year I didn't have a hook-up and finally gave in, dropped the top and ran the engine for heat.
Be prepared....and good luck!
Hi Freeas.abird,
ReplyDeleteMrs Stone174 here...
We always try and do electric hook-up when we can, but when it's not available we have the diesel heater we can use :)
PS We will be dropping the poptop when it's windy otherwise Mr Stone174 will stay awake all night worrying.
